London to Windermere by Train

By Windermere Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Take Avanti West Coast from London Euston to Oxenholme, about 2h 40m, and change there for Northern’s train to Windermere, 19 minutes with four stops. A typical weekday run took about 3h 21m and the best connection about 3h 07m, with between roughly 8 and 22 minutes to wait at Oxenholme.

Euston departures

Connecting trains left Euston at around half past the hour from 05:31, but the morning is patchy: the 05:31 was followed by the 08:30, the 11:30 and the 13:30. From 13:30 there was one every hour until 19:30, with extra trains at 14:40 and 16:40.

Other weekday departures fill part of that morning gap. The 07:30 and 10:30 from Euston reach Windermere with a change at Lancaster instead of Oxenholme, in about 3h 18m, and the 07:30 also connects via Preston.

From St Pancras

A much slower route starts at London St Pancras: East Midlands Railway to Sheffield, TransPennine Express to Manchester Oxford Road, another TransPennine train to Oxenholme, then Northern to Windermere. That is four trains and about 4h 54m, against 3h 21m from Euston, and the departures we found were at 08:03, 09:02, 10:02 and 11:02.

The Caledonian Sleeper

The Caledonian Sleeper leaving Euston at 23:45 is the overnight option. It runs to Carlisle, arriving at about 05:07 after 5h 22m, where you change to Avanti West Coast for Oxenholme (38 minutes) and then to Northern for Windermere. The full journey took about 8h 04m, reaching Windermere at about 07:49, with an hour and three quarters of waiting spread across the two changes.

It suits travellers who want to leave London late in the evening and be in Windermere before 08:00 without giving a day to the journey. The trade-off is that change at Carlisle shortly after five in the morning.

Arriving

Windermere station is about six minutes on foot from Crescent Road, a walk of 465 metres.
