The usual way from Liverpool takes three trains. Northern runs from Liverpool Lime Street to Wigan North Western in about 32 minutes, Avanti West Coast continues to Oxenholme in about 44, and a Northern train covers the last 19 minutes to Windermere. A typical weekday journey took about 2h 05m, with roughly half an hour of it spent waiting across the two changes.
From Lime Street you arrive at Wigan North Western itself, so the change there involves no walk between stations. The middle leg is an Avanti West Coast train, with three stops between Wigan North Western and Oxenholme.
Departures on this route ran every 60 to 120 minutes or so from 05:43 to 20:37, at around 39 or 45 minutes past, and the spacing is uneven: the 05:43 and 06:45 were followed by the 09:39, and the afternoon departures were 12:39, 14:45, 15:39, 16:45 and 18:39.
Some departures from Liverpool need only one change. Trains at 08:13, 12:12, 16:12 and 20:13 reached Windermere with a single change at Oxenholme in about 2h 08m, only a few minutes slower than the main route, so if one of those times fits it saves you the Wigan connection. In the evening the last two options leave close together, the 20:13 with one change and the 20:37 with two.
Journeys changing at Preston, including the 08:39, 13:39 and 17:10, took about 2h 15m and fall between departures on the main route. Routes through Manchester also appear but take between about 2h 40m and three hours.
Once at Windermere, allow six minutes to walk the 465 metres to Crescent Road.
Driving the 86 miles on the M6 takes about 1h 45m, a little quicker than the train from Lime Street.
